Strong weather seals on your garage door are crucial for protecting your home from the elements. Over time, these seals can wear down, allowing rain, snow, or small critters to cause damage. Replacing your weather seals will give you the peace of mind and comfort you deserve. Keep reading to learn how to easily replace your garage door weather stripping in just a few steps.
Garage door weather seals not only protect your home and belongings from various weather conditions and animals but also play a vital role in maintaining a consistent indoor temperature. Sealing all gaps around your garage door helps create a comfortable space and can lower your utility bills.
To start your weather stripping replacement, you’ll need to remove the current seals from your garage door’s frame. This process is typically straightforward and requires just a hammer, pry bar, or flathead screwdriver.
Begin by inserting your chosen tool beneath the edge of the existing weather seals. Push the tool away from your body, lifting the nail and strip with it. Repeat this near each nail to ensure a clean, damage-free removal. Once the first seal is off, use the same method for the remaining strips.
Many weather strips come in pre-cut sizes at your local store, typically ranging from 7 to 9 feet long. Measure the length of your current weather seals with a tape measure to find the exact size you need.
For efficiency, lay your existing weather seal on top of the new one and trace the required length with a pencil. Use a box knife or hand saw to trim it down to size. It’s advisable to cut your side pieces about 1/4 inch shorter than your garage height to prevent them from touching the ground, which can lead to water accumulation and potential rot.
Start by attaching the top weather seal to your garage door frame. With the door closed, ensure the weather seal is flush against the door and fasten it with nails or screws. You can tap the nails halfway in to allow for adjustments.
After securing the top weather seal, position the ends of the side seal up to the corner, ensuring it touches the top strip and does not rest on the ground. Firmly press against the door and secure the side seal with nails halfway in, repeating the process on the other side.
Once everything is aligned, test the garage door by opening and closing it. After making any necessary adjustments, fully secure the seals in place. Now, enjoy a more secure garage and improved energy efficiency!
